{"id":279,"date":"2010-08-26T20:10:52","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T18:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmfestivalresearch.org\/index.php\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T14:59:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:59:13","slug":"about-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.filmfestivalresearch.org\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Welcome to the website of the Film Festival Research Network!<\/h1>\n<p>The <strong>Film Festival Research Network<\/strong> (FFRN) is a loose connection of scholars working on issues related to film festivals, founded by Skadi Loist and Marijke de Valck in 2008.\u00a0 The FFRN aims to make festival research more available, to connect its diverse aspects and to foster interdisciplinary exchange between researchers as well as festival professionals.\u00a0 To achieve this goal, we gathered the available material in a bibliography, put researchers in contact with each other at conferences and\u00a0 encourage communication via a mailing list.<\/p>\n<p>In a first step, we gathered all academic sources in the field that we could find and made them searchable by compiling a thematic annotated bibliography on film festival research.\u00a0 The first edition appeared in December 2008, the second edition dated 22 January 2010 is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.uni-hamburg.de\/Medien\/berichte\/arbeiten\/0091_08.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.\u00a0 The first volumes of the <em>Film Festival Yearbook <\/em>series, edited by Dina Iordanova and her colleagues at St. Andrews, has featured the bibliography, its updates and further information on the field as a resource in print (2009-2012).\u00a0 A peer-reviewed annotated Festival Studies bibliography became available from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordbibliographies.com\/view\/document\/obo-9780199791286\/obo-9780199791286-0155.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford Bibliographies Online<\/a> in 2013.\u00a0 With the FFRN website in place, the bibliography has found a home on our site: see the middle tab in the navigation <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmfestivalresearch.org\/index.php\/ffrn-bibliography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FFRN Bibliograhy<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 We update the bibliography frequently (last 11 June 2025) and welcome suggestions and additions: just email us!<\/p>\n<p>Then, we put researchers in contact with one another and organize pre-constituted panels at <strong>conferences<\/strong>, such as NECS and SCMS. As the network is growing, new meeting places and infrastructures are created.\u00a0 There are two workgroups of the FFRN: the <a href=\"http:\/\/necs.org\/members\/workgroup\/675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Film Festival Research work group<\/a> within the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.necs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NECS<\/a>).\u00a0 Within the Society of Cinema and Media Studies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmstudies.org\">SCMS<\/a>) a <a title=\"Film and Media Festivals SIG at SCMS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cmstudies.org\/?page=groups_filmfestivals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scholarly Interest Group (SIG)\u00a0 for Film and Media Festivals<\/a> has been established.\u00a0 Dedicated panels and workshops organized through the FFRN have also taken place at other prominent conferences such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/services\/screen\/conference2013\/\">Screen <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecrea.eu\/divisions\/section\/id\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECREA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, we wish to help festival researchers to be in contact and exchange ideas about their work.\u00a0 Beyond the information available on this website, interested festival researchers and festival organizers can share information and start a conversation on the <strong>FFRN mailing list<\/strong>. You can <strong>subscribe<\/strong> by sending an email to &#8220;sympa[at]film-festival-research-network.org.ntnu.no&#8221; with the subject line &#8220;subscribe list&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If you have questions about the Film Festival Research Network, want to contribute to the bibliography or post something to the site, please feel free to contact us at: <a href=\"mailto:info@filmfestivalresearch.org\">info@filmfestivalresearch.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Contact<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Skadi Loist<\/strong> is Associate Professor in Film Studies at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/employees\/skadi.loist\">Department of Art and Media Studies<\/a> at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.\u00a0 Skadi has lead several international research projects, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmcirculation.net\/\">Film Circulation<\/a> of films on the festival circuit (BMBF 2017-22) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmuniversitaet.de\/en\/research-transfer\/research\/projects\/project-page\/detail\/gender-equity-policy-gep-analysis\">GEP Analysis<\/a> on gender equity policies in the German, British and Canadian screen industries (DFG\/ESRC\/SSHRC 2021-24). Skadi serves on the editorial board of <a href=\"https:\/\/necsus-ejms.org\/\"><em>NECSUS_European Journal of Media Studies<\/em><\/a> and the advisory board of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.h-net.org\/jfs\/index\">Journal of Festive Studies<\/a><\/em>. They <a href=\"http:\/\/skadiloist.de\/?page_id=9\">co-edited<\/a> several books and special issues, e.g. of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsf-hamburg.de\/bildschoen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bildsch\u00f6n<\/a>:<\/em><em> 20 Jahre Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg<\/em> (2009), <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/9780415712477\">Film Festivals<\/a>: History, Theory, Method, Practice<\/em> (2016), &#8220;Queer\/ing Film Festivals&#8221; (special issue of <em>Studies in European Cinemas<\/em> 15:1, 2018).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marijke de Valck <\/strong>is Associate Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uu.nl\/staff\/MdeValck\/0\">Department of Media and Culture Studies<\/a> at Utrecht University.
